I shot a roll of film on the Hasselblad down near Elitch Gardens in Denver a few days ago so I could test out processing medium format C-41 at home. I developed two or three rolls of color 35mm (my first) last week and everything worked out fine, but something went wrong with this latest roll and everything went to hell. So, hoping for the best, I went back down last night with the same film (the old Portra 400NC) and the Hasselblad. The light was great, I shot a roll of C-41 and a roll of black and white, and headed home to process. This time things went more smoothly but I can’t pinpoint exactly why. For now, the whole affair is a bit too touchy for me to process any critical work on my own. That will still be sent to the lab.

For Christmas this year I decided to make my girlfriend two overly-commercial portraits of our dogs. I took Riley (left) and Donkey (right) down to the studio for a half-hour each over the course of two nights and, after a few dog treats, got them to do what I wanted. Donk isn’t usually allowed at the studio due to his fantastic shedding abilities and I think he was just stoked to be involved.

I’m trying to get comfortable with the idea that I might actually enjoy shooting landscape images. I’ve always enjoyed shooting landscapes that have someone doing something interesting in them, or at least interestingly banal if you don’t care about running, climbing, or the like. But now I find myself shooting a lot of empty spaces and actually looking forward to it. Maybe I’m getting old. My cranky back certainly thinks so.

I’ve added a few new images to the landscape gallery over on the main portfolio site. Please check them out and keep an eye out in the coming days or weeks for updates to the other galleries.

A few weeks back I posted a want ad on Craigslist for an old Polaroid 195 camera. I quickly received an email from a really nice guy who had one that had sat on the shelf for past 15 years. We met in a McDonald’s parking lot, chatted for a bit, and I drove away with the camera. Since then I’ve put about ten packs of Fuji instant film through the thing and it’s been a blast. I shoot a fair amount of instant film on my 4×5, but it’s nice to have something hand-held that I can carry around and quickly pull out if anything catches my eye.

Here’s Emily shooting with the camera while we wait for a friend to finish a 50-mile race last weekend.

In a classic race between my ability to form a complete paragraph and my ability to down this tumbler of whiskey, I am now attempting to write my first blog post in some months.

I’ve been meaning to put together a new gallery on the main site containing images that could loosely be lumped under the term portraiture, but every time I come back to it I’m not completely satisfied with the results. And so I put it off for another day or month or, before I know it, a year. One image that will probably live in that forthcoming gallery is this portrait I took of my friend Scott after spending a few weeks climbing together in Bishop, California. He had a week to kill in Denver before he had to return to Canadia for some advanced schooling, so we spent an afternoon in the studio using expensive gear to make simple images. In this case, I’m satisfied.

A few weeks ago we stopped by the Fisher Towers outside of Moab on our way back from a few days of climbing in Indian Creek. Every time I find myself in the Fisher Towers I wonder why I came back. I like climbing solid rock. The Fishers appear to be comprised of mud and gravel that was buried for maybe 60 years before being puked back onto the Earth’s surface in the form of giant, terrifying towers of red choss that look like they belong in one of Tim Burton’s nightmares. That being said, they are pretty.

Luckily for me, we weren’t there to climb any of the longer, scarier affairs, but the aptly named Cobra seen above. What the Cobra lacks in height and difficulty, however, it makes up for with crumbliness and the lingering thoughts in your head as to how many windy days the summit block has left in it.
